Can I use a different engine?

The Goblin kit is designed to use Cobalt engines and transmissions. If you'd like to use a different engine, it will be up to you to perform the engine swap but you will still need a Cobalt donor to complete the Goblin. To give you an idea of what we reuse from the Cobalt, here's a list of the larger items:

  • subframe
  • control arms
  • knuckles
  • bearing hubs
  • steering rack
  • steering column
  • pedal boxes
  • brake master cylinder
  • shifter assembly
  • BCM and ECM (and TCM on automatic builds)
  • ignition switch
  • gauge panel
  • fuel pump

You will still need to use a Cobalt donor for the bulk of the pieces and then adapt them to work with your engine and transmission. For example, you'd need to use the Cobalt subframe, control arms, knuckles and bearing hubs to build the Goblin rear suspension. Then you'd need to get some axles that adapt from your transmission to the Cobalt bearing hubs and adapt the Goblin frame for your engine and transmission to bolt up.

You would also need to figure out how to get the Cobalt shifter to work with your transmission or customize all of that yourself with your own shifter. We use the pedals straight from the Cobalt so you'd have to adapt your own pedals or go aftermarket. We use the Cobalt electrical system so you'd have to adapt that or use your own wiring harness and computers. The list of things to adapt is pretty long.
